WAVERLEY HOUSE | WILEY ST, WAVERLEY | SYDNEY

Waverley House

A thoughtfully reimagined semi-detached home, Waverley House transforms into a spacious and inviting family haven while retaining its charming, curved architectural character.

The design expands the existing two-bedroom single-story home into a more functional three-bedroom residence with an integrated garage. Curved forms and rounded window details define the addition, softening its presence and blending harmoniously with the original structure.

Client Brief:

The client sought a home that integrates modern living with the constraints of a compact urban lot. Off-street parking was a priority, achieved by preserving the original commercial front portion of the house—a feature approved through a collaborative effort with the town planner and council. A clearly defined entry visible from the street enhances accessibility, while the open-plan living area seamlessly extends into the garden, maximising the use of the compact outdoor space. To preserve an uninterrupted flow and clear views to the garden, all vertical structures and columns were carefully eliminated from the design.

In the tight urban context, the design carefully addressed its impact on neighboring properties, prioritizing the preservation of natural light and ensuring privacy was respected and maintained.

Physical models served not only as a vital design tool but also as an effective way to communicate the proposals to the clients.

Old and New

Ground Floor Plan: The design includes a formal street-facing entry and a secondary access point through the garage, ensuring functionality for both daily use and guest arrivals.

First Floor Plan: Generous bedrooms were achieved by utilizing the attic space above the garage, creating options for a spacious and private master suite.

Master bedroom and ensuite options

Detailed renders of the front and rear facades were created to refine the design and present a compelling vision to the client and council, ensuring the project aligned with its aesthetic and functional goals.
