hūs: an Old English word meaning “dwelling, shelter, home, house,”
Rosalie Bognor and Merle Thornton chained themselves to the bar at the Regatta Hotel, Queensland, AUSTRALIA in 1965. A protest that sparked national public debate about the economic, social and political rights of women. (Source: Bruce Postle Archive, State Library of Victoria)
Women were not allowed in the public bar until 1965 and the Racial Discrimination Act was not passed until 1975, seeing the exclusion of Aboriginal men and women, including servicemen, from drinking establishments even on Anzac Day.
About hū̄s studio
hū̄s studio is an architecture and interior design practice with over 20 years of experience in the UK and Australia. We specialize in high-end individual homes, multi-residential buildings, and hospitality fit-outs. Our passion lies in breathing new life into historically significant buildings through adaptive reuse.
Our Approach
We believe that great design starts with a deep understanding of people and place. Every project is unique, and we take a collaborative, research-driven approach—listening carefully, analyzing the site, and working closely with clients to craft spaces that are both functional and inspiring. Our process spans from pre-purchase feasibility studies and concept design to planning approvals, project management, and on-site delivery.
Through a process of exploration, refinement, and honest dialogue, we develop bespoke solutions that are not only beautiful but deeply connected to their context and the needs of our clients.
