St. Michael Precinct

A bold design connecting heritage, community, and modern functionality.

The St. Michael Precinct is located on the edge of Surry Hills, defined by the intersection of Flinders Street, Albion Street, Floods Place, and Mary’s Place. The design aimed to create a more welcoming and accessible church while introducing an alternative entrance via the rear laneways, which also functions as a meeting room. The proposed structure is a simple brick box punctuated by tall, glazed openings divided by brick piers – a modern take on the ribbed vault detail commonly found in Gothic churches. This approach establishes the building as both a beacon and an anchor, enhancing its presence on the street while integrating historical references with a fresh architectural approach.

Client Brief:

The client’s brief focused on upgrading the seating and flooring within the church while expanding the functionality of the Community Hall. The brief highlighted the need for a much larger and more practical kitchen, as well as the inclusion of a meeting room to better support the community’s needs. A key goal was to find creative ways to re-engage with the public, fostering both accessibility and community connection through thoughtful design.

St Michael Precinct Proposal

The new entrance draws inspiration from the boldness and solidity of the church's architectural character, creating a strong and welcoming entry point that reinforces the building's presence.

The brickwork arches imbue the entrance with weight and presence, creating an inviting threshold that signals welcome and connection.
