Palm Beach House

A modern addition designed to complement its beachside and natural surroundings.

This contemporary addition to a family home in Palm Beach enhances its connection to the natural environment while respecting strict site constraints. The off-form concrete exterior reflects the character of the existing timber weatherboards and integrates with the rocky landscape. By housing the pool, terrace, changing rooms, and man-cave within the existing building footprint, the design preserves the site’s landscape area and creates a functional flow. A new staircase connects the entrance foyer, lounge, and kitchen directly to the pool and terrace, with the addition carefully framing breathtaking views of Pittwater and providing semi-covered spaces for year-round enjoyment.

Client Brief:

The clients requested an integrated pool, a functional "man cave," and the consolidation of internal bathrooms. Internal access to the pool was essential, along with framing an unobstructed vista of Pittwater. With Northern Beaches Council requiring the preservation of the natural landscape, the design had to remain within the home’s existing footprint. This necessitated advanced structural engineering to achieve a column-free span supporting the living area above the pool while preserving the spectacular framed view.

Perched at the summit of the Palm Beach peninsula, the house boasts sweeping views of both Whale Beach and Pittwater.

A physical model was created to illustrate how the pool and man cave are carefully integrated within the existing house's footprint, fitting snugly into the site while preserving the natural landscape.

Strategic structural engineering enabled a column-free span, allowing the living room to hover above the pool while maintaining an unbroken vista of Pittwater.
