HUNTERS HILL HOUSE | RESERVE ST. HUNTERS HILL | SYDNEY

Hunters Hill House

A thoughtful reimagining of a California bungalow in a conservation area.

This 120sqm addition, complemented by a new pool, is located in a Conservation Area of Hunters Hill, directly opposite a protected reserve. The project involved re-planning and extending an original California bungalow with a convoluted, outdated layout, while addressing the complexities of a sloping site. The design strikes a balance between respecting the heritage character and introducing open plan living tailored to modern needs.

Client Brief:

The original brief proposed a two-storey addition, later revised to a single-storey plan following a Feasibility Study. Despite this adjustment, the design incorporates provisions for future vertical expansion (STCA), including structural loading and easily adaptable elements. The clients sought an aesthetic that blends Japanese Design with NYC apartment influences, creating a distinctive fusion of styles.

Initial watercolour and pen sketches helped refine the concept, focusing on connecting the old and new elements seamlessly.

Ground Floor Plan

The design integrates modern functionality with an open layout while preserving key heritage features to maintain the site’s historical integrity.\

Section

The existing heritage roof was reinstated, with the new addition connected via a low-level entrance hallway. This transitional space allows access from both sides of the site, clearly defining the relationship between the original structure and the extension.
