HOTEL 1888

A Heritage Experience Like No Other. Where Sydney’s History Meets Contemporary Design

Hotel 1888 is a boutique hotel that masterfully blends its rich history as a wool store from the 1800s with modern luxury. Located in Pyrmont, Sydney, this heritage-listed building has been meticulously transformed into a unique accommodation that honors its industrial past while embracing a sleek, contemporary aesthetic. Guests are treated to exposed brick walls, towering timber beams, and thoughtfully curated interiors, all designed to create an authentic connection to the building's origins. The hotel offers a vibrant yet intimate experience for both locals and visitors looking for something beyond the typical.

Client Brief: The client envisioned an innovative hotel that would preserve and celebrate the building's historical essence while providing a high-end, modern stay experience. Emphasis was placed on maintaining the authenticity of the original structure, including the timber beams and exposed brick, which were carefully restored and incorporated into the design. The challenge was to introduce luxurious modern amenities without detracting from the building's historical charm. The client sought a blend of industrial and contemporary design that would resonate with today's travelers looking for a unique boutique hotel experience.

A striking centerpiece created in collaboration with a local industrial designer, the large bespoke lamp on the reception desk is a tribute to the hotel's commitment to design innovation. Influenced by the classic Bankers lamp, this design merges historical charm with contemporary style. A smaller version of this custom-made lamp is featured in every guest room, offering a cohesive design touch that ties together the industrial elegance of the entire hotel.

From the early design stages of Hotel 1888, it was clear that cutting an atrium into the center of the former wool store would be essential. This clever architectural move allows natural light to flood into the more compact rooms around the building's core, creating a brighter and more inviting atmosphere. The atrium not only enhances the building's aesthetic but also preserves the heritage character while offering a functional solution for lighting the interior

The Williamson Suite at Hotel 1888 draws inspiration from legendary figures like James Bond and The Rolling Stones, offering guests an exclusive and indulgent experience. With private street access and a six-person bath, this room is perfect for those seeking a playful yet luxurious escape. Complete with its own private bar, the space allows guests to celebrate and relax without disturbing others, creating the perfect atmosphere for those looking for a vibrant, uninhibited stay
