Carrington Road Apartments

A contemporary residential development with thoughtful design and strategic use of form.

This $4.5 million residential flat building comprises seven modern apartments with underground basement parking. Rob led the project, overseeing feasibility, design development, and the preparation and submission of the DA while liaising closely with clients and consultants throughout. The scheme was successfully built and project managed by the client, reflecting a streamlined delivery and commitment to quality.

Client Brief:

The client’s goal was to maximize the number of apartments on the site while integrating parking for all residents on a challenging, slim, and sloping block. The design aimed to capture as many views of Coogee as possible, with a focus on enhancing the streetscape and architectural expression. The staggered box concept was developed to create visual interest, define individual apartments from the street, and respond to the site’s unique constraints.

The design features a strong palette of simple, durable materials, creating a clean and elegant visual language throughout the development.

The initial concept plan proposed the creation of long, narrow apartments toward the rear of the site, maximizing both views and sunlight for the majority of units.

The design of the street-facing apartment incorporates a lowered ground floor, providing enhanced privacy from the street while maintaining connectivity and access.

The penthouse apartment is defined by a striking corten steel box, serving as a sculptural architectural feature that contrasts with the surrounding material palette. Positioned on the top floor, it spans the full width of the apartments below, offering a larger, more expansive living space.
