BAPTISTERY |  EsGLESIA SANT JOAN DE MALTA, PALMA, MALLORCA

The Baptistery at ESGLESIA SANT JOAN DE MALTA

Bridging the sacred and the secular through thoughtful architectural intervention.

Set within the heart of Palma, the Baptistery at Esglesia Sant Joan de Malta is a considered response to the surrounding public square and its connection to the church. The design addresses the division created by residential blocks, forming a threshold that unites the "secular" public space of the Plaça de la Llotja with the "sacred" sanctity of the church. By introducing a Baptistery, the intervention transforms the space into a symbolic and functional bridge, enhancing the spiritual journey within its urban setting.

Client Brief:

The brief invited an open exploration of possibilities, rooted in the site’s historical and cultural context. The location, adjacent to the Plaça de la Llotja and fronting the Lonja de Mallorca—a 15th-century Gothic civil landmark—offered an opportunity to create a dialogue between the public square and the hidden sacred building.

The design features a low roof over the new entrance, carefully positioned to allow glimpses of the existing church behind. This subtle architectural gesture invites curiosity and reverence, creating a harmonious connection between the new intervention and the historic structure.
